“Richard Cory“ (497)
He was someone who was highly praised and looked up too. Cory
was rich and had everything going for him. The people who looked up to him
where wrong because he wasn’t happy at all. The thing that didn’t make his
happy was that people judge him based on his money. Irony: apparence vs.
reality. This “real” vs. “ideal” becaue if it was an ideal stpry he would be
happy and the apparent and the reality would match. The people see having a
perfect life but the reality is something different.
“Miniver Cheevy” (497)
He want to live in the middle ages. He drinks because he
wished he has a different life. He believes he was born in the wrong century
because all his dreams and hopes belong to the middle ages. So to escape the
boring life, he decides to drink to become in his fantasy life. Cheevy wants to
live his ideal life but in reality his lives in the different time period. He
doesn’t see that his lives a great life, so he wasted it away by drinking. That
it was most people do now, they waste away a good life. The meaning pf Miniver
Cheevy suggest a life full of depression. His first name Miniver even sounds
like minimal achiever.
“Mr. Flood’s Party” (498)
Mr. Flood is an alcoholic who likes to have a party for
one, himself. He sings and talks like someone is with in but in relilty he is
all alone. It is ironic because Mr.Flood’s Party sounds like he is having an actual
party. He drinks because he wants to fill the emptiness in him. He drinks to
have an ideal life, but in reality he has no one. He remembers the past when he
is drunk and that is when he was not alone and was happy. He doesn’t look to
the future and that is what people tend to do in their life.
